Why is the legacy of Starr Piano (1872-1952) and Gennett Records (1917-1934) worth keeping alive?

  • Through its Gennett Division, Starr helped pioneer the music now known universally as jazz, big band, blues, country, gospel, and pop.
  • Gennett helped launch the careers of many musicians who became legends in their time and after. Among them were Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Lawrence Welk, Charley Patton, Roosevelt Sykes, Uncle Dave Macon, Fiddlin’ Doc Roberts, Gene Autry, Georgia Tom Dorsey, and Homer Rodeheaver, to name a few.
  • Starr jump-started Gennett Records by successfully contesting a flawed recording process patent that had stifled competition in the industry. In doing so, Starr created opportunity not only for Gennett, but also for many other newcomers to the field.
  • Starr Piano’s talent recruiting and recording management practices made Gennett a prototype of the independent labels that discover new music and new musicians. “Indies” are still a driving force in music evolution.

How does the Starr-Gennett Foundation keep the legacy alive?

  • We preserve the legacy of Starr Piano and Gennett Records through collection and interpretation of surviving documents, images, recordings, and other artifacts, and in the Gennett Records Walk of Fame at the Starr Piano Historic (factory) Site.

  • We promote the legacy of Starr and Gennett through exhibits, publications, presentations, school-based education for youth, print and broadcast media, and the internet.

  • We celebrate the legacy of Starr and Gennett through concerts and an annual music festival as well as new and reissued recordings.

  • We collaborate with other arts, education, tourism, and historic preservation groups to achieve mutual aims and benefit the community.

We welcome and appreciate your support—thank you! Please consider donating your time as well. Call us at (765) 962-2860 to learn about our volunteer needs.
